Summary
The Principal Planner (COM4) serves as the state's technical expert on the Growth Management Act's periodic update process within the Department of Commerce's Local Government Division. The position provides advanced program administration, technical assistance, and policy guidance to counties and cities across Washington State, while also reviewing comprehensive plans and development regulations on a statewide basis. Based in Eastern Washington, this role leads programmatic outreach, manages grants and contracts, and supports the GMS Plan Review system to prevent backlogs.
Key qualifications
- 8 years of combined experience in local or regional government planning including zoning code administration, public consultation, data analysis, or policy review
- Strong working knowledge of Washington State's Growth Management Act (RCW 36.70A)
- Intermediate skill level in Microsoft Office Suite products including Excel, Word, Teams, and SharePoint
- Experience with Washington State planning and plan implementation procedures (preferred)
- AICP certification or ability to obtain within two years of appointment (preferred)
- Experience with local governance structures and working with elected officials and local government staff (preferred)
