Summary
The Deputy State Safety Engineer provides strategic leadership for the Washington State Department of Transportation's statewide highway safety program, developing and implementing policies, guidance, and initiatives to improve roadway safety and reduce fatal and serious injury crashes. This position works directly with the State Safety Engineer across WSDOT regions, headquarters, and external agencies to ensure consistent, data-driven safety practices and oversee federal highway and rail-highway crossing safety compliance. The role leads staff and cross-functional teams in advancing agency safety priorities through policy development, performance evaluation, and knowledge transfer.
Key qualifications
- Extensive experience in transportation safety analysis, audits, evaluations, and diagnostic assessments
- Bachelor's degree in transportation planning, land use planning, or engineering plus Professional Engineer licensure in Washington State
- Demonstrated leadership experience managing and developing professional and technical staff and multidisciplinary teams
- Proficiency with quantitative and qualitative analyses and safety analysis tools
- Experience interpreting government regulations and ability to testify as an expert to legislature and courts
- Strong communication skills translating complex technical concepts for diverse audiences
