The Disaster Preparedness Assistant works within the New York State Watch Center of the Office of Emergency Management, monitoring multiple information sources for situational awareness of incidents affecting New York State. Responsibilities include preparing daily operational briefings, communicating with state and federal officials, serving as the first point of contact for emergencies, receiving and disseminating emergency information across multiple networks, and acting as the message center during State Emergency Operations Center activations. This is a 24/7/365 position with shift work including evenings and weekends, and may require travel and deployment during emergencies.
Key qualifications
- Two years of emergency management experience in coordination, planning, training, analysis, or incident response
- OR Associate's degree in relevant field (emergency management, homeland security, public administration, etc.) plus one year of emergency management experience
- OR Bachelor's degree or higher in relevant field
- Valid New York State Driver's License or demonstrated ability to meet transportation needs
- Current NY State employees: one year of permanent or contingent-permanent service as a Communications Technician 1 eligible for transfer
