The Senior AI Developer (IT Assistant Director II) is a founding role within the Maryland State Department of Education's Information Technology Branch, responsible for designing, building, and maintaining AI-powered applications that support MSDE's operational and programmatic needs. The incumbent serves as the enterprise software development and applied AI subject matter expert, establishing development standards and architectural patterns for the growing AI program while working collaboratively with IT leadership, program offices, and security/privacy teams. This position requires someone who is adaptive and self-directed, capable of operating with significant technical autonomy while remaining aligned with organizational priorities and fully compliant with Maryland cybersecurity law, FERPA, and state AI standards.

- Seven or more years of professional experience designing, building, and deploying software applications with demonstrated oversight of a codebase and direct AI/ML application development experience
- Experience deploying and maintaining applications in cloud environments with containerization and Infrastructure as Code, plus working proficiency in Python or comparable language
- Experience with secure development practices and handling sensitive/protected data in regulated environments, including working knowledge of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA)
- Direct professional experience in government or public-sector work serving public-facing programs
- Demonstrated ability to adapt to shifting priorities, evolving requirements, and changing technical and regulatory landscapes
